| What is Gout? Gout is a type of arthritis that occurs when too much uric acid builds up in the body, and forming crystals deposits in joints. This causes pain, swelling and inflammation at the joints. Gout can also be hereditary. Gout usually affects men over 40 but it can also affect women, especially after menopause. What is Uric Acid? Protein is a major nutrient in our food Uric acid is a byproduct of the digestion of purine-rich food. Purine is a type of protein. Why does Uric Acid Crystal accumulate at the joints? Uric Acid is a waste product that needs to be excreted by the body. This process is taken care of by kidneys, where blood is filtered and uric acid is passed out of the body as part of urine. When the kidneys are not able to cope with the high level of uric acid, the excess uric acid will reenter the blood circulatory system. Where the blood circulation is slow, particularly at small joints (most frequently fingers, toes and ankles), the blood tends to be lower in temperature and higher in concentration. This will lead to the deposit of uric acid at the joints. When time goes by and the deposit become abundant, they crystallize. The crystals stay in the cartilage or synovial membrane and sybsequently lead to severe inflammation. What causes gout? Excessive intake of foods rich in purines. Uric acid is formed when purines break down. Foods particularly high in purine content include (Non-vegetarian) beef, goose, organ meats, mussels, achovies, mackerel, sweetbreads and yeast. Other types of meats, poultry, fish and shellfish are moderately high in purines. (Vegetarian) Spinach, asparagus, beans, lentils, mushrooms and dried peas also contain moderate amount of purines. Other causes: · Drinking too much alcohol. · High blood pressure. · A family history of gout. · High levels of triglycerides. · Infections, obesity and physical and emotional stress. What are the symptoms? Symptoms of gout include extreme pain in a single joint, usually the base of the big toe. It can also affect other joints such as the feet, fingers, wrists, elbows, knees, or ankles. The joints may appear purple-red, swollen, hot and stiff. Severe pain that attack throughout the day and may even disrupt sleep. Fever, cold and rapid heart beat – in serious cases. Rarely fatal, the pain and swelling normally subside in 1-2 weeks.
